Swangey Lakes is a complex of three lakes
situated just off the A11 near to Attleborough,
Norfolk. The lakes are made up of; a Main Lake, a
"Pike" Lake and the "Match" Lake.
The lakes are mature gravel
pits, with their gravel being extracted for the
nearby A11 road improvements years ago.
As you
would imagine the bottom of all of the lakes is made up of silt, with gravel spots,
bars and plateaux to be found in various areas around the
lakes.

The Main Lake
At around 5 acres the main lake can get quite
busy at times (especially during the summer
holidays). The lake contains a massive head of carp,
with specimen to over 35lb being present and
regularly gracing the banks. Backing up the big 30's
is a sizeable head of fish in the 20 - 29lb bracket,
offering some good sport to all.
The lake has lots of gravel spots, and in the
summer there are luscious sets of pads to fish to,
which do have a good record for spitting fish out.
Each swim has it's own set "area of water" which
will be explained to you by the bailiff, so don't
think that the water in front of your swim is yours
because it may well not be (this is especially so on
the "clay bank", with a full time angler living on
the point swim).
The Pike Lake
The pike lake is very much under fished, and does
contain some very nice carp, including a fully
scaled that does go over 30lbs. Some of the back
swims are quite a walk, but visiting on a summer day
you will clearly be able to see the residents
mooching about, and also make out some of the key
features, there is a big weed bed clearly visible in
there this summer (2006).
The big catfish in this lake was caught in August
2006 at 58lb.
Because of the excavation work being carried out,
there are certain areas of the lake which are out of
bounds.
The Match Lake
The third lake on the Swangey Complex is called
the Match Lake, and contains a large stock of
smaller carp. There are one or two surprises
residing in this lake though and a hot summer's day
floater fishing is not a bad option.
There are lots of members on the
Forum
who fish Swangey on a regular basis and can give you a lot more details on the lake and how it is
currently fishing at present.
